Council Democrats Propose Resolution Affirming Commitment to City Services for All Residents, Including Immigrants
Against the backdrop of the aggressive immigration policies of the Trump administration, the New Britain Democratic members of the City Council have proposed a resolution affirming the City’s, “commitment to the safety, dignity, and equal treatment of all residents.”
In its resolution, the Council Democrats express that, in the community, “concerns related to federal immigration enforcement have created uncertainty among some residents, potentially discouraging individuals from accessing essential city services or engaging with local institutions.”
However, the resolution proposes that, “the City reaffirms that access to city services—including emergency response, public health, education, and social services—shall not be denied or restricted based on immigration status, except as required by law.”
The resolution further resolve that the City encourage, “the provision of clear, accurate, and multilingual information on residents’ rights and available services,” doing so, “in partnership with community-based organizations, as resources allow.”
Additionally, the resolution calls upon City departments to continue, “practices that promote language access, non-discrimination, and respectful service delivery for residents with limited English proficiency,” while ensuring that such efforts remain consistent with, “existing policies and applicable law.”
The resolution seeks an official city record of the Council, “affirming the City’s commitment to equal access public safety, and community trust.
The resolution is on the agenda of Wednesday’s Council meeting.
