Hoops for Homeless Benefit 3 versus 3 Basketball Tournament Planned

The office of Mayor Bobby Sanchez has announced that, “A coalition of volunteers representing educational, recreational, and municipal services in New Britain recently announced the start of their fundraising drive for the 11th annual Hoops for Homeless, a three-on-three basketball tournament.”

“Every young person in New Britain deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the challenges they may face at home,” said Mayor Sanchez. “For more than a decade, Hoops for Homeless has brought our community together to support students and families experiencing housing instability, turning a basketball tournament into meaningful opportunities for our youth. The scholarships and resources provided through this effort make a real difference, and I’m grateful to the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers who continue to show up for our kids year after year.”

The 2026 event is be held at Osgood Park on Saturday, October 17, from 9am to 1:30pm, event organizers announced. “Teams of players in grades 5 through high school from across Connecticut are welcome to register. For more information, visit: https://www.ccsu.edu/hoopsforhomeless.”

In addition, a “tipoff fundraiser” is planned for Friday, October 16 at 4pm at the Back Nine Tavern, at Stanley Golf Course. “The event will run from 4-6pm,” event organizers said, “and will include a fundraiser celebration coordinated by the Mayor’s office.”

Hoops for Homeless has raised over $80,000 over its ten years, which, organizers say, “has been disseminated primarily towards student scholarships to NBHS graduates attending college, who experienced homelessness / housing instability during their high school years and for resources to help families and students in need.” Organizers add that the event raises awareness about homelessness among children.

“Hoops for Homeless,” organizers say, “holds a tax-exempt status through our fiduciary, the City of New Britain. All profits from this event are given directly towards supporting youth and families who experience housing in-security during high school, with the far majority going directly to college scholarships for graduating seniors.”

Organizers are offering their thanks for support to Siracusa Moving and Storage, The Petit Foundation, Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, New Britain Municipal Employees Community Services Association (CSA), CT Freemasons and J. Timothy’s among others.
