State Police Reportedly Investigating Allegations in Blogoslawski Report
According to the Hartford Courant and confirmed by other press sources, State Police are investigating after a scathing report was issued by the firm hired to investigate allegations of misconduct in the City Revenue Collector’s Office. That report said that, “The evidence indicates that Ms. [Cheryl] Blogoslawski improperly backdated tax payments for her own personal benefit and for other taxpayers, including at times at the direction of the previous Mayor’s Office,” the office of former Mayor Erin Stewart (R).
Newly elected Mayor Bobby Sanchez (D) later responded to reports of the investigation, saying, “The opening of a Connecticut State Police investigation underscores the seriousness of what was uncovered in this report. These are significant allegations involving the public trust, and they deserve a full and independent review. We will continue to cooperate fully with any State Police investigation.”
New Britain’s state legislative delegation, Sen Rick Lopes (D-6), Rep Gary Turco (D-27), Rep Manny Sanchez (D-24), Rep David DeFronzo (D-26) and Rep Iris Sanchez (D-25), had previously called for further investigation, “including review by the Office of the Attorney General and any other appropriate state authorities, to ensure full accountability and to determine whether additional civil or criminal action is warranted.”
Mayor Sanchez added that, “this cannot end with one office or one individual. The concerns identified point to broader issues that require continued scrutiny, which is why the internal review has been expanded across all of City Hall. If there were other abuses of public trust or potentially criminal acts, they should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law.”
Former Mayor Erin Stewart (R) previously dismissed the investigation report’s findings as political.
