Lauding Founder Joey Listro, New Britain ROOTS Begins Search for New Executive Director
Praising its founder and outgoing Executive Director, Joey Listro, local social justice, food access and education organization, the Board of Directors of New Britain ROOTS has announced plans for its leadership transition and ongoing work.
Listro has recently announced that he is taking the leadership position at the Connecticut Forest & Park Association and is planning to depart from the leadership role he has had at New Britain ROOTS since 2013.
The New Britain ROOTS Board says that,
Joey’s passion and dedication speak for themselves. In the 13 years of New Britain ROOTS, we have grown to support vegetable gardens at every school in New Britain, produced and distributed literal tons of food every year, and supported fresh food access throughout the city. Thousands of New Britain residents know more about growing healthy food thanks to our intergenerational programming.
New Britain ROOTS reaches everyone from pre-schoolers to senior citizens, connecting to our inherent rights to clean productive soils and healthy, culturally relevant foods. In greenhouses and raised beds built, fruits and vegetables served, classes taught, and honeycombs filled, New Britain ROOTS has grown into a viable, beloved community nonprofit supporting community health, education, and economy. All of this is part of Joey’s impact in the hometown that he loves.
Now, the Board says, it is turning its attention to the search for a new Executive Director for the organization’s next chapter, while, “working closely with the staff to continue operating programs and services as the growing season gets underway.”
As part of the succession plan it has in place, the Board says has posted a description of the Executive Director position, which also has details for how to apply for the position.
The organization says that questions can be directed to info@newbritainroots.org.
The Board says, “whether you apply for the role yourself, share the position with your network, or give us feedback about what you’d like to see in the next Executive Director, we’d like to hear from you!”

New Britain ROOTS says its mission is to, “cultivate community connections and equitable access to quality food through empowerment and learning with the people who grow, prepare, and eat food in New Britain.”
The Board of Directors of New Britain ROOTS is Craig Schmitt (Chair), Stanley Dombrowski, Yvette Ghannam, Meg Hourigan (Vice Chair), Tina Knowlton, Debbie Kowaleski, Rich Marzi, Hanna Petrisko (Secretary), Mya Tillman, Miranda Velez (Treasurer).
