Council Resolution Honors August as Black Business Month
A resolution has been introduced in the New Britain City Council to recognize August as Black Business Month.
The resolution says the Council, “encourages all residents to support and patronize Black-owned businesses, celebrate their achievements, and join in the collective effort to create a more inclusive and equitable economy.”
The resolution has been submitted by the eight Democratic Council members, Ald. Candyce Scott (D-3), Ald. Francisco Santiago (D-5), Ald. John McNamara (D-4), Ald. Iris Sanchez (D-3), Ald. Wilma Barbosa (D-2), Ald. Neil Connors (D-4), Ald. Lori McAdam (D-2) and Ald. Nathan Simpson (D-1).
Ald Scott said that, “This resolution is extremely important for the Black community and I am so happy we are able to spread awareness with the hope of improving the disparities in economic growth the Black community is still struggling to overcome.”
“Black Business Month is celebrated annually in August,” the resolution says, “providing an opportunity to acknowledge and honor the significant contributions of Black-owned businesses to the economic well-being, cultural richness, and social fabric of our city and the nation.”
Scott, who is a local Black businesses owner, says she is encouraging everyone to support Black owned businesses, adding that she, “wants to improve our economic growth and our future for our youth.”
The resolution adds, “Black-owned businesses in New Britain and across the country play a vital role in fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and serving as pillars of their communities, despite facing unique challenges and barriers to success.”
The resolution says that, “City of New Britain is committed to supporting Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs by promoting equity, providing resources, and encouraging community engagement to ensure their continued success and prosperity.”
