New Britain Police Department Holds Citizen’s Police Academy

By Jessica Angelo-Julien, MBA, JP

New Britain Police Department has held the citizens academy for years and, in this year fourteen, excited residents embarked on a six-week crash course on the ins and outs of being a police officer.

This program is meant to encourage community engagement with officers. Since this class was held so early in the year, the Chief of Police hopes to add one more this year.

During the six-week program, the attendees received overviews in patrol, criminal investigation, K-9, traffic, detective and finally SWAT with simulated police interactions.

While a few attendees just wanted general knowledge, others were interested in becoming officers. “I think it provides insight of what is going on and decision making,” stated Nathan Lincoln, one of the attendees.

At the conclusion of the program the attendees received certificates and a coin.
