The City of New Britain Celebrates Black History Month

Congresswoman Jahanna Hayes Joins the City Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities in Honoring Nine Prominent Black Residents

By Jessica Angelo-Julien, MBA, JP
Chair, New Britain Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities

On February 22nd nine prominent black residents were recognized for their contributions to the city.  It is important to acknowledge the work done by everyday people doing what they enjoy.

The individuals were nominated by their peers and asked to submit their biography to the office of Human Rights and Opportunities Commission.   The submissions were reviewed and accepted.

The event was well attended with a surprise visit from Congresswoman Jahanna Hayes (D-5).  Jerrell Hargraves, the Human Rights and Opportunities Officer spearheaded the event with the support of the Commission.

The honorees were Torrence Conaway, Letungia Hill, Dr. Valerie Ingram, Sindrea James, Tarsha Moore, Joan Pina, Daniel Senior, Johnny Turner and Phyllis Watts.

Congratulations to them all.
