City Council To Establish A Committee On Housing And Homelessness

In response to recent testimonies by people who are homeless or at-risk to becoming homeless and due to substantial increase in the rate of homelessness in New Britain, the city council, under the leadership of the democratic caucus, is voting in its January 10th meeting to add to its ordinance a Committee on Housing and Homelessness. The committee will serve as a subcommittee of the Committee on Planning, Zoning and Housing and will consist of five to nine alderpersons. The duties of the committee would include working with various city departments and organizations to identify the current unmet needs of the local homeless population, initiate services, identify funding sources, and make recommendations how the funding be administered. In addition, the committee will compile data on available housing options in the city to promote growth of affordable housing.
