The lecture is tonight, February 25, 2020, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm. CCSU says that, “Admission is free.” The lecture is in the Alumni Hall room in the Student Center on the CCSU campus.

Dr. Agozino is a professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at Virginia Tech. On the Virginia Tech website, Dr. Agozino says,

I am a scholar-activist who values inclusive excellence and diversity with critical attention focused on people of African descent and other marginalized groups around the world. I emphasize race-class-gender issues in my contributions to learning, discovery and community engagement beyond the boundaries of the classroom.

Dr. Agozino’s, lecture is entitled, “The Amistad and the Law.”

The Amistad case, which centered on Connecticut, involved an 1839 revolt by people from what is now the African nation of Sierra Leone against the slavers holding them captive on the ship, La Amistad, and a court case, beginning in Connecticut, after the ship was found near Long Island. The Africans were held prisoner in New Haven and advocated for their freedom, with the aid of abolitionists, while United States courts struggled with questions of human rights. The case was settled when the United States Supreme Court ordered their freedom.

The lecture is sponsored by the CCSU Amistad Committee, the CCSU Center for Africana Studies and CCSU.

CCSU is located at 1615 Stanley Street.
