Democratic Mayoral candidate Chris Porcher is calling on a Democratic City Council candidate to drop out of the 2019 race following online comments.
Antonio Lavoy, Sr. apologized for comments on Facebook images of him referring Mayor Erin Stewart as a “b-tch” and a “$3 hoe,” saying,
I would like to apologize for an old post that is currently being shared on Facebook. There is no excuse for my choice in words but I would like to say that I’m truly sorry for my comments and those who were offended by it. You have my word that in the future, I will not make inappropriate comments like these. Please accept my humble apology.
But Porcher issued a statement saying,
Given information brought to my attention recently, I would like to respond on behalf of the Porcher campaign. I condemn such language.
As a leader, I strive to embody the ethical practices to have a positive impact and encourage respect for all of our residents. I do not condone the use of derogatory language, bullying, public humiliation or hate speech.
I have run my campaign addressing the issues that continue to plague New Britain. This language has caused division within our city, but we must come together to focus on building a stronger community.
I’ve spoken to Mr. Lavoy regarding the use of this language. He has apologized to the mayor and New Britain residents. I informed him that I believe he should step out of the race. Hopefully, Mr. Lavoy will make the right decision. As I did not choose the slate of candidates, I encourage the DTC to meet with Mr. Lavoy and make their recommendations.
Democratic Council candidate Chris Anderson issued a statement saying,
I am disappointed to learn about the derogatory remarks written in the past about New Britain’s mayor by a Democratic candidate for Common Council. I will not repeat them here. Although I have very real policy disagreements with our mayor, it is never acceptable to engage in name calling, misogyny, or sexist remarks. These types of comments have been commonplace in New Britain politics for years and it needs to stop now. I’ve said it before: we have too many real issues to solve to resort to low blows and insults.
The words of one individual do not represent my values as a Democrat. That’s why I’m calling for the resignation of Antonio Lavoy as a candidate for office so we can move forward to discuss the issues that really matter to our community.
Porcher’s comments on the matter concluded that, “The Porcher campaign will continue to work diligently to prevent instances like this, as we strive to bring civility and new hope to New Britain.”
