CT United FC Restarts Season with Back-to-School Drive

Connecticut United FC will be offering free admission to their game on Sunday September 4th to any fans who bring backpacks or other school supplies for those children in need. All proceeds of the drive will be donated to New Britain public schools.

“We’re known to be a grassroots team and it starts by giving back to the city [New Britain] that took us in earlier this year and to the surrounding cities,” United general manager James Perkins said. “The idea is to help those that are in need and donate the backpacks and school supplies we can to make sure going back to school is a great experience for everyone.”  Perkins continued, “Our growing fan base is passionate and this is just another way to connect with them. It will be a great day of soccer and a chance for the area fans to make a contribution to a family in need as the school year opens locally.”

As far as the types of donations that CT United is looking for, their management suggests the following items. The team is asking for pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, colored markers, new lunch boxes, spiral notebooks, tablet paper, and backpacks.

“We hope this becomes an annual tradition — one that will only grow and gain momentum,” Perkins said. “We are confident that our fans will answer the call and donate the needed school supplies.”

This season CT United has put up a 6-2-2 record, but this will be their first game following a two-month summer break. The team currently sits in third place in the American Soccer League, behind the Long Island Express and the Philadelphia Fury.  Even though it was a friendly match, CT United shockingly defeated the Polish professional team Stal Mielec by a score of 1-0 back in June. Coming off that impressive victory, CT Untied will be looking to carry that momentum through the rest of the season.

The American Soccer league is similar to the Atlantic League that the New Britain Bees baseball team play in. CT United players play in the ASL hoping to be discovered by higher ranking professional leagues and signed onto those teams.

CT United will be looking for revenge on Sunday as the Fury handed the team its first loss in its inaugural game back in April. The Fury also head into the game with an undefeated record of 9-0-1.

The game kicks off on Sunday at 6pm at Veterans Stadium in New Britain.
