CT People’s Survival Programs has announced a “Rebellious Rhythms” event to, “Celebrate the start of Latine Heritage Month with dinner and a compelling workshop led by local historian Nina Vázquez.”
Organizers say that Latine Heritage Month,
is annually observed from September 15th to October 15th, to celebrate, honor, recognize, and learn about the vibrant histories, cultures, traditions, contributions, achievements, and influence of people whose ancestors come from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Event organizers say that Vázquez will present her work, “Rebellious Rhythms,”
Exploring Puerto Rican History Through Reggaetón
A workshop that will highlight the political and cultural significance of the genre, connecting Puerto Rican history to broader diasporic struggles, and reflecting on local Connecticut history and activism
The event is to be Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 6:00pm at the Diaspora Multicultural Society. Organizers have a registration website for the event.
The Coalition says that, Nina Vázquez
is a Puerto Rican academic, community organizer, and cultural worker whose work explores the intersections of race, music, and identity. She created curriculum on Puerto Rican and Afro–Puerto Rican history for the Connecticut Historical Society and has served as Coordinator for Upward Bound at Wesleyan University and President of the Connecticut Association of Educational Opportunity Programs (CAEOP), advocating before Congress for first-generation and low-income students. Now a Community Organizer with the Center for Leadership & Justice, Nina works on anti-racism, immigrant rights, and housing justice while leading historical workshops that center culture as a tool for liberation. Her scholarship often uses reggaetón and hip-hop to examine colonialism, queerness, and resistance in Puerto Rican and Latine communities.
Organizers say, “Please register in advance so that we may have an accurate head count for dinner. Parking is available in the lot behind the venue.”
