Beloin-Saavedra Endorsed by Republican Party for Mayor

Republican City Council Assistant Leader, Ald Sharon Beloin-Saavedra (R-1) announced that she has been endorsed by the city Republican Party as their candidate for Mayor in this year’s city elections.

Beloin-Saavedra is presently serving as a Ward 1 city Council member. She has served on a number of elected and appointed roles in the city over the years, including the Council and the Board of Education.

Beloin-Saavedra’s campaign website says that,

Sharon’s vision for New Britain’s future includes a focus on elevating the City’s neighborhoods, providing tax relief to residents through responsible fiscal management, ensuring New Britain’s children have access to high-quality public education, and making sure New Britain remains a vibrant and safe community where residents, workers, and visitors alike can thrive. With Sharon as Mayor, New Britain will move forward with strong, experienced leadership that puts people first.

As President of the Board of Education, Beloin-Saavedra supported the appointment of controversial Superintendent of Schools Kelt Cooper, despite serious questions about his candidacy prior to his appointment. Beloin-Saavedra also presided over Cooper’s controversial reorganization to “neighborhood schools”, a policy that appears to have left the city’s schools with a notable difference in the ethnicity and income between schools.

New Britain Democratic State Rep Bobby Sanchez (D-25) is running for Mayor as a Democrat. New Britain Democrats are set to meet on Thursday to endorse their candidates.
