Special Election Day Arrives in 25th District

Election Day has arrived in New Britain’s 25th Assembly District for the special election to fill the state representative seat left vacant following Mayor Bobby Sanchez’s recent election to the city’s top office. The special election features a contest between Democratic City Council member, Ald Iris Noemi Sanchez (D-3) and Republican City Constable Jamie Vaughan (R).

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, voters who have not yet voted by they will be able to vote at their designated polling places:

  • Voting District 6: Chamberlain School (120 Newington Ave.)
  • Voting District 7: School Apartments (50 Bassett St.)
  • Voting District 8: Graham Apartments (107 Martin Luther King Dr.)
  • Voting District 9: New Britain Senior Center (55 Pearl St.)
  • Voting District 10: Generale Ameglio Society Hall (13 Beaver St.)
  • Voting District 11: International Church (40 Acorn St.)

Iris Sanchez is campaigning on a platform focused on housing, quality education, public safety, and infrastructure improvements to address street flooding. She said that the people of the district deserve a State Representative who knows the concerns of everyday people and a representative who fights for what families need. Sanchez said, as the longest serving Council member she, “has championed initiatives to strengthen public safety, expand youth engagement, and build stronger relationships between residents and city officials.”

Mayor Sanchez has endorsed Iris Sanchez for the state legislative seat he held until recently, saying, “I have known Iris for a long time. She is a tireless worker and a strong advocate for her community. She listens, she collaborates, and she gets results. I’m looking forward to working with her, and the rest of our legislative delegation to deliver for our community.”

Jamie Vaughan, the Republican in the race, previously ran for the seat in 2024. Vaughan has stated his campaign is “laser focused on reducing property taxes, tackling high electric bills, and making policy decisions that help the business community create jobs”. He has also emphasized public safety and affordability as key tenets of his platform.

Voting is only taking place in the 25th Assembly District, which generally includes the city’s downtown area, North-Oak neighborhood and parts of the Broad Street, East Side and Belvedere neighborhoods.

City election officials say that, unlike in general elections, same-day registration is not available for special elections.
