Fashion Show at the Library Celebrates Black History Month

That Fashion Show, “Black New Britain”, held at the New Britain Public Library for Black History month was an experience of empowerment and community, according to participants.

The event was a part of the Library’s, “A Celebration of Black America: Past, Present & Future” featuring a film screening, author talk and fashion show on February 15th.

The fashion show featured Gorgy By Candy Designs, live musical performances, African dresses, an African wedding scene and quotes from African leaders. The Connecticut Association of Black Democratic Clubs and local non-profits and vendors who supported the African American Club at New Britain High School.

As a New Britain High School student said,

This was my first time participating in a fashion show and while I enjoyed the experience it gave me insight into the stressors that come with putting together such a production. This is a dream of mine, to be in the nitty gritty of the fashion industry, so I appreciate being a part of this production.

“I loved the fashion show. It was fun even with the chaos and I made some new friends too can’t wait till the next one,” said middle school age model Jacob.

“I was really proud and honored to be part of celebrating Black History! History!” said Mary Liscano. “And to be part of the fashion show with a very beautiful and talented woman!”

“Your designs were really amazing!!!!!” Liscano added. “You are so creative.”

Gladys Silva-Perales said, “The fashion show was unique and a great way to bring together the community!”

Elizabeth, who helped with the fashion saw behind the scenes and helped host the show, said,

This was such an exciting experience to participate in the Black History Month Fashion Show hosted by Alderwoman Candyce Scott at the New Britain Library this past Saturday! She not only showcased many of her designs from her Gorgy by Candyce collection, she also featured many inspirational quotes from notable Black Americans. This event was much more than fashion and style! It was a tribute to people of color across America!

“I am so happy we were able to celebrate Black History Month with an educational fashion show about culture that told a story, empowered us, and celebrated our future,” said Ald Scott. “I do these fashion shows because I love fashion and I want to educate and bring our community together. This is why I will continue to have these events. I want to thank the library for hosting the event and all of the models and volunteers who helped make this show a successful event.”

The Library’s program also included a Film Screening and Talk that featured the film, “The 29th Connecticut Regiment and the Fight for Freedom”, “the story of the brave African-American men who enlisted in Connecticut’s 29th ‘Colored Infantry Regiment’ during the American Civil War and fought for the freedom of their people.” It also featured and Author Talk, “Reading is Healing”, featuring, “Author, psychotherapist, and New Britain High School alumni Emely Rumble’s whose upcoming book, Bibliotherapy in the Bronx, is distributed by Simon & Schuster.”
