New Britain Public Library to Host A Celebration of Black America: Past, Present & Future

The New Britain Public Library is hosting “A Celebration of Black America: Past, Present & Future” featuring a film screening, author talk and fashion show.

The event is to feature three events on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

At 1:00pm, there is to be a Film Screening and Talk, featuring the film, The 29th Connecticut Regiment and the Fight for Freedom in the Library Community Room,

See the story of the brave African-American men who enlisted in Connecticut’s 29th “Colored Infantry Regiment” during the American Civil War and fought for the freedom of their people…and the nation. Presented by the film’s producer Chris Barlow, Director of the The Berlin Equity Action Team.

At 2:00pm, there will be an Author Talk, “Reading is Healing” in the Library Community Room,

Author, psychotherapist, and New Britain High School alumni Emely Rumble’s work is rooted in the philosophy of bibliotherapy, where literature, poetry, and expressive writing become powerful tools in supporting individuals on their journey to well-being. Rumble’s upcoming book, Bibliotherapy in the Bronx, is distributed by Simon & Schuster.

At 3:00pm, there will be a Fashion Show, “Black New Britain” in the Library Periodicals Room,

New Britain Alderwoman, Candyce Scott, will direct a fashion show featuring her clothing line, Gorgy By Candy, created to empower youth, share stories, and teach about cultures. Also highlighted will be African Attire, Joey’s Fashion, as well as artwork created by Enox Shabazz.
