Biden Delegates Chosen Include New Britain Council Leader
Delegates to represent Connecticut at this summer’s Democratic National Convention were chosen on Wednesday, including a New Britain City Council member.
Council Majority Leader, Ald. John McNamara (D-4) was elected as one of the eight delegates representing the 5th Congressional District at the Democratic National Convention. All of the delegates are pledged to President Joe Biden (D), the winner of the Connecticut Presidential Preference Primary.
Connecticut is represented by 74 delegates at the Democratic National Convention.
The state Democratic Party says that, “There are District-Level Delegates and At-Large delegates. District-Level delegates are elected via caucus in each of the five Connecticut Congressional Districts. At-Large Delegates fill out the delegation and are selected after the District-Level elections.”
Party rules say that delegates selected must be 50% women and 50% men and follow other affirmative action guidelines to ensure diverse representation.
The district “caucus” for New Britain was held at Waterbury Portuguese Sports Club. Similar events were held at the same time in the state’s four other Congressional districts.
The party says that, “The 2024 Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago from August 19th to 22nd.” Biden has already clinched the nomination, and will face former president Donald Trump (R), who has already clinched the Republican nomination.
