Fire Department Announces “Open Recruitment” for Fire Fighter Positions

New Britain Fire Chief Raul Ortiz has announced that the New Britain Fire Department is having an “open recruitment process,” for fire fighter positions.

Minimum requirements described in the recruitment for the positions include:

  • Being at least eighteen years of age
  • Holding a high school diploma or GED
  • Having a valid driver’s license.
  • “Must be able to posses a Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) before employment consideration.”

Ortiz says that, “Registration for the CPAT is critical. Deadline for CPAT is July 28th. Application is due August 18th.”

The recruitment announcement for the positions says that, “The CPAT application and appointment dates can be found on the state’s website: www.ct.gov search CPAT.”

The formal, “Job Announcement,” for the positions direct prospective applicants to a State Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection web page that contains links to “Full Session Information,” and a, “CPAT Application Form 2018.”

That website says, “The Candidate Physical Ability Test is a practical exam used to test a candidate’s physical ability to perform a job task related to firefighting.  CPAT is a physically demanding test that requires a candidate to use his or her physical, mental abilities and, in some cases, balance.  The CPAT involves eight events that must be completed in 10 minutes 20 seconds.  The CPAT process is used in the selection of firefighters in participating fire agencies throughout the State of Connecticut.”

The recruitment announcement for the positions says that, “Applications must be submitted electronically via our Firefighter Application System by August 18, 2018. www.firefighterapp.com.”

The formal, “Job Announcement,” for New Britain, which is listed on the firefighterapp.com website says that the salary of the entry level position is $68,329.00 annually. The Job Announcement says that the applications are, “to create an employment list.”

The Job Announcement says that, in their duties, a fire fighter, “performs fire prevention, firefighting, and emergency medical responder duties.  Primary responsibility is the protection of life and property.  Performs duties associated with Emergency Medical Responder services.  Work includes the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require performance under such hardships as smoke and in close quarters.”

The Job Announcement says that the exam for the positions is sixty percent written and forty percent oral. It says that the written test will be held on August 25, 2018.
