Sewer Rate Increase Proposed

The city Board of Public Works appointed by Republican Mayor Erin Stewart has proposed that the city’s sewer use fee be increased to a rate of $4.30 per hundred cubic feet of water used for the upcoming budget year. The proposal is on the agenda of the June 13, 2018 City Council meeting.

The proposed increase would be a 1.41%, or $0.06 per hundred cubic feet higher than the current rate of $4.24 per hundred cubic feet.

The proposed sewer use fee would increase the rate to 51% higher than it was in the 2013-2014 budget year, a $1.46 per hundred cubic feet increase from the 2013-2014 rate of $2.84.

The sewer use fee funds the Sewer Operating Fund, which is separate from and in addition to the regular annual General Fund budget. It funds maintenance of the city’s sewer system and water treatment at the Mattabassett District.

The sewer use rate is based on the amount of water that is used by a metered property.
