Connecticut Hispanic Democratic Caucus Endorses Merrill Gay for Mayor and Entire New Britain Democratic Slate

The Connecticut Hispanic Democratic Caucus (CHDC), a statewide coalition of Hispanic/Latino elected and appointed officials, community leaders, clergy, and business leaders, has endorsed Democrat Merrill Gay’s candidacy for Mayor of New Britain, as well as the entire Democratic slate in this year’s New Britain elections.

“Our caucus typically only endorses Hispanic candidates,” said CHDC president Norma Rodriguez.”

“However,” Rodriguez said, “with no Hispanic candidate running for mayor, the glowing endorsement Merrill received from Bobby [Rep. Bobby Sanchez D-25] and the wealth of Hispanic candidates on the Democratic slate running alongside Merrill, we felt that it was the right thing to do,”

“We are very confident that Merrill will serve our community as Mayor of New Britain,” said Rodriguez.

Rep. Sanchez said that, “I am proud to stand with Merrill as he receives this endorsement. He is the only candidate for mayor who actually wants to include every community in the city of New Britain, not just the ones that agree with him.”

The mission of the Connecticut Hispanic Democratic Caucus is to promote the political empowerment amongst Latinos throughout the State of Connecticut. The CHDC held its statewide meeting at the Diaspora Multicultural Society in New Britain on August 19th.

Gay said he is proud to have received the CHDC’s endorsement. “This endorsement is not just about me. It’s also about our great Democratic slate whose diversity is representative of all city residents. I am proud to earn the support of such an important coalition, and look forward to continuing our partnership to take back New Britain.”
