New Britain Progressive Editorial Policy on Reporting the Party of Elected Officials and Candidates

1 min read

It is the general New Britain Progressive editorial policy that the choice given by a candidate to voters about their party alignment on the official ballot that the voters actually voted on is that official’s political party. The New Britain Progressive will report this information. An elected official who was a candidate under more than one party is reported as a member of the party under which they received the greatest number of votes.

Of course, if a sitting elected official changes party alignment and is accepted into a new party or party caucus, the New Britain Progressive would report their new party alignment.

The letter “D” is used to denote Democrat and “R” to denote Republican. Office holders who represent districts are typically also identified by their district number, with New Britain At-Large City Council members noted as “AL”. Statewide office holders are typically identified as “CT”.

Candidates for offices are identified as of the party for which they are a candidate. Candidates of a major party (Democrat or Republican) who are “cross-endorsed” by a minor party are identified as of the major party. Candidates of one major party, cross-endorsed by another are typically identified by the party with which they are otherwise known to be aligned.

Petitioning candidates not running with a party are identified as petitioning candidates.
